The Arc of Chester County’s mission is to advocate, educate, and provide services to empower individuals with disabilities and their families to enhance the quality of their lives.
After attending a transition program and graduating from high school in 2001 Lauren Riordan landed her first job at Genuardi’s in Chesterbrook, one of The Arc’s 200 community businesses partnered with The Arc’s Comprehensive Employment Services (CES) program. In 2010 Genuardi’s was closing so Lauren decided to search for a new job and within one month, with job support from the CES program, found a new job at TJMaxx in Devon working in merchandising. The job is a perfect fit for Lauren and her skills; she is proud that she always meets the job requirements and is often praised by her supervisor for doing so.
Lauren rarely misses work, except for vacations with her parents. Lauren enjoys working and is respected and well-liked by her coworkers and has received the Employee of the Month award as voted by her coworkers. This past summer, Lauren was also honored, among other employees, for five years of service at TJMaxx.
CES collaborates with many community partners (employers) who recognize the talents of the people The Arc works with and realize how much they have to contribute to the workplace. TJMaxx received The Arc’s annual Employer of the Year Award in 2005 and has been employing Arc CES participants since the programs started 15 years ago.
